A facelift is a type of plastic surgery aimed at counteracting the effects of aging. Basically, it involves stretching and tightening the skin and underlying facial layers. Facelifts are usually carried out under general anaesthesia and the results are a younger appearance by approximately 5 to 10 years. The surgery is available to both women and men. To optimise the results of surgery, a facelift is often combined with other procedures such as liposuction of the face and neck, eyelid surgery or a necklift.
Necklifts correct loose skin in the neck region.
The surgery is suitable for:
Anyone troubled by numerous wrinkles around the lips, loose skin in the cheek and chin region and sagging eyelids, as well as a general reduction in skin elasticity.
When to undergo surgery:
We usually operate men and women between the age of 45 and 60.
What to expect:
Smoother, tighter skin, which will make you look 10 to 15 years younger. The effects will become evident about 6 weeks after surgery.
How is the surgery performed:
Operatively, under general anaesthesia. The surgery takes about 2-3 hours. The surgical incision leads from the hairline, from the temple downward in front of the auricle, around the earlobe, and then continues into the crease behind the auricle. If healed properly, the scar merely looks like an inconspicuous line near the temple and behind the auricle.
We also often treat deeper layers beneath the skin – so-called SMAS lifting, which results in smoother and firmer skin and a more lasting effect.
A facelift can also be combined with plastic surgery of the eyelids, liposuction of a double chin, or most frequently a necklift.
Length of hospitalisation:
You will spend 2 days at the clinic. However, to ensure problem-free healing, it is advisable to take a 10-day vacation and avoid sports for 4 weeks.
What to expect after surgery:
A special elastic headband will need to be worn for about 14 days after surgery; we will help you choose one in your hair colour so that it is as inconspicuous as possible. Stitches are removed 10-14 days after surgery. Swelling of the face and eyelids is common after surgery. It will take a few weeks after initial healing for the facial tissue to stabilise. The face should not be exposed to intense sunlight or massaged for about 2-3 months after surgery. The effects will become visible in about 6 weeks.
